Historic First in the United States: Keisha Lance Bottoms Elected Governor of Georgia

Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms has won the gubernatorial election in Georgia, becoming the first Black woman in US history to be elected governor. Her victory has ended the Republican Party's long-standing dominance in the state.

The US midterm elections held on November 3 have produced a historic result. Keisha Lance Bottoms, former mayor of Atlanta and the Democratic Party's candidate, defeated Republican billionaire Rick Jackson to become the 84th governor of Georgia.

With this victory, Bottoms has made history as the first Black woman elected governor in the United States. She has also become the first Black woman in Georgia to hold an elected constitutional office.

Her victory is seen as a sign of the Democratic Party's strengthening political position in the state. Democrats last won a gubernatorial election in Georgia in 2002. Bottoms is expected to take the oath of office in January and officially begin her term.

From Atlanta Mayor to Governor

Keisha Lance Bottoms began her political career in 2010 as a member of the Atlanta City Council, where she served until 2017.

In 2018, she was elected the 60th mayor of Atlanta and remained in office until 2022. She subsequently joined the administration of former US President Joe Biden, serving as Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement from 2022 to 2023.

During her tenure as mayor, Bottoms introduced several important initiatives. She established a dedicated office focused on equity, diversity and inclusion, took steps to eliminate cash bail requirements in certain cases, and launched the Open Checkbook platform, allowing the public to monitor the city's financial transactions.

However, her time as mayor was also marked by controversy. In particular, the 2020 killing of Rayshard Brooks by Atlanta police and the death of eight-year-old Secoriea Turner in a shooting incident that same year drew criticism of the city administration.

Bottoms decided not to seek re-election for a second mayoral term in 2022.

Healthcare, Housing and Education at the Centre of Her Campaign

During her gubernatorial campaign, Keisha Lance Bottoms focused primarily on addressing the economic challenges facing residents, particularly the rising cost of living.

Her election platform highlighted several key priorities:

Healthcare: Expanding access to medical insurance for low-income residents and broadening Medicaid coverage.

Housing: Reducing housing costs and increasing access to affordable homes.

Education: Increasing funding for public schools and strengthening the education system.

Bottoms believes that reforms in these areas can help improve living standards in Georgia and reduce social inequality.

It is worth noting that she is not the first Black woman to run for governor in Georgia. Democratic politician Stacey Abrams previously ran for the position in 2018 and 2022 but lost both elections.

Republican Billionaire Rick Jackson Defeated

Bottoms' main opponent was billionaire Rick Jackson, who has built a major business empire in the healthcare sector.

Jackson unexpectedly entered the gubernatorial race in February, intensifying competition within the Republican Party. In June, he defeated Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones in the Republican primary runoff, becoming the party's official candidate.

During his campaign, Jackson highlighted his difficult childhood and his business achievements.

The company he founded, Jackson Healthcare, is one of the largest healthcare staffing and recruitment companies in the United States. It operates in all 50 states and reportedly generates approximately $3 billion in annual revenue.

However, his business success and substantial financial resources were not enough to secure victory at the ballot box.

A New Political Chapter for Georgia

Keisha Lance Bottoms' victory is being viewed as a significant development not only for Georgia but also for the broader US political landscape.

Her election marks a historic milestone for the representation of women and Black politicians in the country's highest executive offices.

At the same time, the Democrats' return to the governor's office in Georgia after a lengthy absence suggests that political competition between the two major parties in the United States is entering a new phase.

The new governor faces major challenges, including delivering on her campaign promises, addressing healthcare and housing problems, strengthening the education system and supporting the state's economic development.
