Bill Gates: Risks of artificial intelligence could emerge sooner than its benefits

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned about the potential risks of artificial intelligence (AI).
Gates said that if the necessary measures are not taken, biological, cyber and psychosocial risks could emerge sooner than the benefits AI could bring.
In an interview with The New York Times , he noted that unlike the human brain, AI is not subject to biological limitations and could surpass human intelligence in the future.
According to Gates, existing AI systems could already be used by malicious actors for biological and cyberattacks. He also identified the ability to disable security mechanisms in open-source models as a potential risk.
“You cannot rely on the industry to regulate itself”
Gates said that stronger government oversight of AI is important.
“You cannot rely on the industry to regulate itself,” he emphasized.
AI and jobs
Gates said AI could have a significant impact on the labor market. However, he noted that the fact that technology can perform a certain task more cheaply than a human does not automatically mean that the task should be handed over to AI.
He also said that AI could help address healthcare and other major challenges in low-income countries.
According to Gates, the next five years could be critical for managing AI-related risks. He stressed the need for timely measures to minimize the potential impact of risks such as biological and cyberattacks, as well as job losses.
