Sharp Decline in Smartphone Sales in China

According to IDC data, smartphone shipments in China fell by 15.4% in the third quarter compared with the same period last year, reaching 57.9 million units. Huawei maintained its leading position with 12.2 million smartphone shipments and a 21% market share. Apple ranked second with a 17.8% market share, although its shipments declined by 4.3%.

Other major Chinese smartphone manufacturers, including Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi, also experienced declines. Their shipments fell by 17.6%, 24.9%, and 20.4%, respectively.

Weak consumer spending and rising prices for memory chips and other components contributed to the market slowdown. According to Arthur Guo, a senior analyst at IDC, manufacturers are passing these higher costs on to consumers and raising retail prices despite declining shipments.

IDC stated that Huawei maintained its position thanks to its broad product portfolio and relatively moderate price increases. Although Apple's new iPhone models achieved better-than-expected sales, the limited number of models offered this year negatively affected the company's shipments.

Honor was the only leading brand to increase its shipments compared with the previous quarter. IDC described this as an early sign of a potential market recovery.
