He Conquered the World on Foot: The Adventurer Who Returned Home After 28 Years

Karl Bushby has completed an extraordinary journey around the world lasting nearly three decades, covering 31,000 miles. The 57-year-old adventurer was welcomed by hundreds of cheering supporters in his hometown of Hull.

British adventurer Karl Bushby has returned home after completing a 28-year journey around the world. Having covered approximately 31,000 miles (49,900 kilometres), he arrived at his family home in the English city of Hull on November 2.

On Monday morning, hundreds of people gathered in the town square to applaud the 57-year-old traveller. Addressing the crowd, Bushby said that after 28 years on the road, he could not have wished for a better welcome.

The adventurer loaded his few remaining belongings onto a cart and headed towards his family home. Waiting for him there were his mother, his 36-year-old son and his 12-year-old grandchild.

An extraordinary 31,000-mile route

Karl Bushby's journey around the world began in 1998. Having previously served in the British Army's Parachute Regiment, the adventurer decided to change his life following difficulties in his personal life.

An idea once expressed by his father also played an important role in his decision. His father had drawn a line on a world map from London to New York and wondered whether it would be possible to walk the entire distance. Bushby decided to turn that idea into reality.

He set off from Chile with just a few hundred dollars, a tent and an inexpensive plastic camera. Starting in South America, he travelled north across the American continents, crossing the dense jungles of Central America before eventually reaching Alaska.

The traveller crossed the ice between Alaska and Russia and continued towards Asia. His route took him through Russia, Mongolia and China. After swimming across the Caspian Sea, he entered Europe and eventually completed his long journey in England.

A journey expected to take 10 years stretched to 28

Bushby initially expected his journey around the world to take approximately 10 years. However, political, legal, financial and natural obstacles along the way considerably extended the expedition.

The adventurer was briefly imprisoned in Panama, held at gunpoint by armed individuals in Mexico and detained by Russian authorities for allegedly crossing the border illegally.

In addition, the 2008 global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted his travel plans.

According to Bushby, he spent only 15 of the 28 years actually walking. During the remaining time, he had to deal with visa applications, logistics, financial arrangements, sponsorship agreements and media commitments. As a result, he was forced to return to Mexico on several occasions.

What was the most difficult part of the journey?

In an interview with Reuters last year, the adventurer said that one of the greatest challenges of such a lengthy journey was monotony.

According to him, in deserts and Arctic regions, the landscape can remain unchanged for days or even weeks, which can take a psychological toll.

In an interview with Britain's The Telegraph newspaper, Bushby also emphasised that an expedition of this kind in the modern world requires more than just physical endurance.

He explained that much of a 21st-century global expedition involves dealing with bureaucratic and geopolitical challenges, in addition to geographical obstacles. In some cases, waiting is simply the only solution.

Documentary film about the adventure in the works

A documentary film about Karl Bushby's 28-year adventure is currently in production. The project is expected to cover the events of his life, the challenges he encountered and the route he travelled.

The adventurer also plans to begin a speaking tour across England in the coming weeks. During these events, he will share stories about his experiences and the challenges he faced during his journey around the world.

Karl Bushby's story is not merely an extraordinary travel achievement; it is also an example of human determination, patience and commitment to a goal. After nearly three decades and thousands of miles on the road, the British adventurer has succeeded in turning a dream once drawn on a map into reality and returning home.
