Alphabet Earnings Report Puts Global Markets Under Pressure as Asian Stocks and US Futures Decline

Mixed reactions to earnings reports from artificial intelligence companies, the US Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision and geopolitical developments have increased uncertainty across global financial markets. A sharp decline in Alphabet shares has weighed on US stock futures.

Asian stock markets weakened on Thursday, while US stock futures fell amid selling pressure in the technology sector. Investors are focusing on the profitability of artificial intelligence investments, financial results from major technology companies and monetary policy decisions by leading central banks.

Alphabet shares fell by around 10% in after-hours trading following the company’s financial results, dragging Nasdaq futures down by 1%. The company’s market value declined by approximately $400 billion. In contrast, Microsoft shares rose by around 3% after the company reported financial results that exceeded expectations.

Investors are also monitoring earnings reports from Amazon and Intel, both of which are expected to release their results later in the day.

Asian Stock Markets Lose Ground

Diverging expectations for the technology sector and corporate earnings reports have intensified selling pressure across Asian markets.

Samsung Electronics reported that its operating profit surged nearly ninefold in the third quarter to a record high, driven by strong demand for artificial intelligence chips. Despite the results, the company’s shares fell by more than 4%.

South Korea’s KOSPI index dropped 2.6% after rising by approximately 7% in the previous session. Japan’s Nikkei index declined by 0.7%. MSCI’s broad index of Asia-Pacific shares excluding Japan also weakened.

China’s CSI 300 index fell by 0.9%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index gained 0.2%.

Meanwhile, SK Hynix shares rose by another 1.3%, following an 11% rally in the previous session on the back of strong financial results.

According to Jamie Hanna, an investment representative at VanEck, the market’s reaction to intelligence on the company’s traditional advertising business. At the same time, Alphabet and Microsoft continue to generate revenue from artificial intelligence through cloud services and data centres, indicating that growth prospects remain strong in certain segments of the sector.

Federal Reserve Keeps Interest Rates Unchanged

The US Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged at its latest meeting, as widely expected. However, two committee members voted in favour of a rate increase, intensifying debate over the future direction of monetary policy.

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh struck a more confident tone regarding the inflation outlook during his press conference. His remarks triggered movements in the US Treasury market. Investors are now turning their attention to September’s Personal Consumption Expenditures

(PCE) price index, the Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of inflation. Market forecasts point to a monthly increase of 0.3% in the core PCE index, compared with a 0.2% rise in the previous month. The yield on two-year US Treasury bonds fell by six basis points in the previous session before stabilising at 4.6933%. According to Kerry Craig, global market strategist at JP Morgan Asset Management, the votes in favour of a rate increase could be interpreted by markets as a signal that monetary policy may be tightened further in the future. However, investors are awaiting clearer signals regarding the timing and scale of any potential rate increases.

Central Bank Decisions in Focus

Monetary policy decisions by central banks remain a major focus for global markets.

The Bank of Canada raised interest rates on Wednesday for the first time in more than three years and warned that further increases could follow. Meanwhile, the European Central Bank is expected to leave interest rates unchanged at its meeting on Thursday.

These decisions are influencing investor expectations regarding inflation, economic growth and financing costs.

US Dollar Stabilises in Currency Markets

In foreign exchange markets, the US dollar stabilised against major currencies after falling by 0.2% in the previous session. The New Zealand dollar, commonly known as the kiwi, remained under pressure after the country’s central bank surprised markets by keeping interest rates unchanged. The currency fell by approximately 1% overnight to $0.5626.

Oil Prices Slip Amid Geopolitical Developments

Oil prices also moved lower. Brent crude futures fell by 0.4% to $114.91 per barrel following a report by The Wall Street Journal that US Vice President JD Vance had sent a letter to Mohsen Rezaei, chairman of Iran’s Security Council, in an effort to revive peace negotiations. The possibility of renewed diplomatic engagement with Iran could affect assessments of risks to global oil supplies. However, the future direction of energy prices will depend on geopolitical developments and the global balance between supply and demand.

What Are the Main Risks for Markets?

The current market environment shows that investors are assessing several key factors simultaneously: the profitability of massive investments in artificial intelligence, inflation trends, central bank interest rate policies and geopolitical risks.

Alphabet’s sharp share-price decline highlights how sensitive the technology sector has become to corporate earnings amid elevated market expectations. Meanwhile, results from Microsoft, Samsung and SK Hynix suggest that demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure remains strong.

In the coming days, earnings reports from Amazon and Intel, US inflation data and the European Central Bank’s decision will be among the key developments capable of influencing the direction of global financial markets.
