Asian Markets Trade Mixed as U.S. Stocks Retreat from Record Levels

Tokyo. Volatility in U.S. stock markets following corporate earnings reports has also affected Asian markets. On Wednesday, major regional stock indexes showed mixed performance. Investor interest in chipmakers and artificial intelligence technologies continued to support gains in some markets.

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 index rose 0.6% to 68,193.13 points. South Korea’s Kospi gained 2%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index advanced 0.1%, while Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.7%. The Shanghai Composite Index recorded virtually no change.

On Wall Street, major U.S. indexes closed slightly lower on Tuesday. The S&P 500 fell by less than 0.1%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.3%, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.2%. Despite Goldman Sachs reporting quarterly earnings that exceeded analysts’ expectations, its shares erased their earlier gains and ended the session down 0.2%.

Analysts expect aggregate earnings for companies in the S&P 500 to increase by approximately 30% during the summer months compared with the same period last year. However, high inflation, mounting pressure in the bond market, and conflicts in the Middle East remain key concerns for investors.

Competition Intensifies in the Technology Sector

Amid growing enthusiasm for artificial intelligence, concerns persist over the high valuations of semiconductor manufacturers’ shares. Technological advances by China’s memory chipmaker CXMT have raised expectations that competition in the sector could intensify. In Asian trading, shares of Samsung Electronics rose, while SK Hynix shares declined.

At the close of trading in the United States, the S&P 500 fell 1.79 points to 7,805.45, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 180.45 points to 51,670.10, and the Nasdaq declined 41.52 points to 27,204.38.

Oil and Currency Markets Remain Volatile

Energy prices continue to fluctuate amid uncertainty over how conflicts in the Middle East could affect global energy supplies. According to the source text, Brent crude initially fell 0.9% to $105.69 per barrel. In subsequent trading, U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose 0.89% to $94.88 per barrel, while Brent crude gained 0.81% to $106.55 per barrel.

In currency trading, the U.S. dollar weakened against the Japanese yen, falling from 158.32 yen to 158.24 yen. The euro strengthened against the dollar, rising from $1.1203 to $1.1210.

In the coming days, investors will focus on corporate earnings reports, inflation data, and the potential impact of geopolitical risks on energy prices.
