China Expands the Yuan’s Use Beyond Trade

China is working to strengthen the yuan’s role in international financial markets. The goal is to increase its use not only in trade payments but also in international lending, investment, and countries’ foreign exchange reserves.

Encouraging trading partners to pay in yuan is not enough. Investors also need more opportunities to borrow in yuan, invest, and manage financial risks with ease.

To support this effort, China plans to increase the number and size of yuan-denominated government bond issues in Hong Kong. Financial instruments that help investors protect themselves against changes in interest rates and exchange rates are also being expanded.

It will also become easier for foreign institutions to issue yuan-denominated bonds in China. Known as “panda bonds,” these instruments allow foreign entities to raise funds in yuan.

China is also expanding its international payment system. According to the figures provided, annual transaction volume through its cross-border yuan payment system reached 180.2 trillion yuan in 2025—roughly four times the level recorded ten years earlier.

Through these measures, Beijing aims to make the yuan more widely used in international finance and strengthen its position in a system dominated by the US dollar.
