Returns Decline at the World's Largest Wealth Fund

The world's largest sovereign wealth fund, managed by Norges Bank Investment Management, recorded a return close to zero by the end of the year. The 0.5% return on equity investments was not enough to offset the 3.5% loss on fixed-income investments.

The fund generated a 0.4% return on private real estate investments and a 7.5% return on private renewable energy infrastructure investments. However, its overall return was 0.18 percentage points below the benchmark set by Norway's Ministry of Finance.

Trond Grande, the fund's deputy chief executive officer, said that rising interest rates toward the end of the year negatively affected the performance of bonds and other fixed-income investments. As a result, the fund ended the year with a slight loss.

Established in the 1990s, the fund invests Norway's oil revenues in international markets and currently holds investments in more than 7,200 companies worldwide.

Its largest equity holdings include technology giants such as Nvidia, Microsoft, Apple, Alphabet, Amazon and Meta Platforms. Price fluctuations in these companies' shares are increasingly affecting the fund's overall returns.

According to Grande, returns on equity investments were also close to zero. However, there were significant differences across sectors. Energy stocks recorded the strongest gains, while interest-rate-sensitive sectors such as utilities and real estate lost value.
