Asian stock markets mostly declined on Tuesday. Despite gains in artificial intelligence-related stocks on Wall Street, major indexes across the region fell. Oil prices remained elevated amid continued uncertainty surrounding the war with Iran.
According to Capitalistaz.com , in early trading, Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 index fell 0.6% to 64,512.35, while Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 index declined 0.8% to 8,772.10.
South Korea’s Kospi index dropped 2.8% to 5,605.31, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index fell 1% to 23,947.37. The Shanghai Composite Index showed little change at 3,732.29.
Analysts say investors are remaining cautious as they await upcoming earnings reports from major companies.
Technology Stocks Rise on Wall Street
On Monday, major U.S. stock indexes moved in different directions. The S&P 500 rose 0.4%, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.1%. However, most stocks outside the artificial intelligence and technology sectors declined, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.1%.
Shares of Nvidia, one of the leading manufacturers of artificial intelligence chips, rose 1.4%, making the company one of the main contributors to the S&P 500’s gains. Its large market capitalization means that changes in its share price have a significant impact on overall market indexes.
SpaceX shares also rose 1.3%. The company’s activities related to its artificial intelligence business, xAI, and its founder Elon Musk’s announcement that he would give every child in the United States a stake in SpaceX next year have drawn investors’ attention.
At the close of trading, the S&P 500 had gained 31.29 points to reach 7,690.73, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 290.85 points to 26,430.89. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 36.38 points to 51,966.03.
Bond Yields and Oil Prices in Focus
The large-scale investments directed toward artificial intelligence chips and data centers, much of which has been financed through borrowed funds, are also raising concerns in the bond market. The yield on 10-year U.S. Treasury bonds rose from 5.09% to 5.14% on Friday.
Prices in the energy market also continued to rise. U.S. benchmark crude increased 0.15% to $103.50 per barrel, while Brent crude, the international benchmark, gained 0.07% to reach $109.47 per barrel.
Uncertainty over when the war with Iran will allow energy supplies and markets to return to normal remains one of the key factors keeping oil prices elevated.
In currency trading, the U.S. dollar weakened from 158.46 yen to 158.45 yen. The euro traded at $1.1225.
Although gains in the artificial intelligence sector supported some of the major U.S. stock indexes, they were not enough to prevent declines across Asian markets. Investors are focusing on upcoming corporate earnings reports, bond yields and geopolitical risks in the energy market.
