Apple is preparing to change its memory supply chain!

Apple is reportedly in talks with China’s CXMT to diversify its memory supply chain. The potential partnership is said to be part of Apple’s strategy to reduce its dependence on major memory manufacturers such as Micron and Samsung. CXMT has stated that it is open to exploring cooperation opportunities with leading technology companies worldwide. This statement is seen as a signal that potential discussions with Apple may be ongoing.

The company plans to rapidly expand its production capacity. CXMT aims to reach a monthly production capacity of 300,000 wafers across three 300 mm DRAM factories by the end of the year. By the end of 2026, it plans to increase HBM-focused production to 50,000 wafers per month. CXMT is continuing mass production of LPDDR5X memory and is starting LPDDR6 production. The company also plans to move to high-volume HBM3 production later this year.

For Apple, the main advantage would be increasing the number of suppliers and reducing the risk of rising memory prices. However, CXMT’s high production utilization could limit its ability to meet Apple’s required volumes. The impact of a potential partnership on market competition remains to be seen.
