The euro has weakened against the US dollar amid rising geopolitical tensions in Ukraine and expanding protests in France. The euro fell by as much as 0.5% to $1.1183 before partially recovering and trading around $1.1226.
Tensions in Europe have increased after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused US President Donald Trump of pressuring Kyiv to make concessions to Russia. More than 500,000 people participated in protests in France against energy and living costs, while approximately 2,400 people were arrested.
Rodrigo Catril, a strategist at National Australia Bank, said the protests could make it more difficult for the government to implement strict economic measures. In his view, this situation could push the euro below $1.11.
The French government is planning €43 billion in measures to reduce next year's budget deficit. However, upcoming presidential elections and disagreements in parliament are complicating the implementation of fiscal reforms. Growing uncertainty across Europe continues to put pressure on the euro.
