Car sales in China have fallen sharply!

China’s automotive market contracted sharply in August. Car sales in the country fell 24% year-on-year to 1.54 million units. The ongoing real estate crisis and pressure on consumer spending have caused domestic sales to decline by more than 20% since the beginning of the year. Weakening domestic demand has pushed automakers toward overseas markets. Chinese automakers’ vehicle exports rose 78% in August to 888,000 units. The share of vehicles shipped to foreign markets in total sales increased from 20% to 38%.

Major companies are strengthening their growth strategies in overseas markets. BYD raised its overseas sales target for this year from 1.5 million to 2 million vehicles. In August, the company became China’s largest NEV exporter, shipping more than 184,000 vehicles. Meanwhile, Tesla shipped around 36,000 vehicles from its Shanghai factory to overseas markets. The price war in the domestic market is also weakening the sector’s financial performance. In the first seven months of the year, the automotive industry’s profit margin fell to 3.6%. This is significantly below the 6.5% average profit margin in China’s manufacturing sector, highlighting growing financial pressure on companies.
