Netherlands Moves Its Gold Reserves to London!

The Dutch Central Bank is changing the locations where its gold reserves are stored. Between March and August, approximately 86 tons of gold were transferred from New York and Ottawa to London. As a result, London has become the largest storage location for the Netherlands’ total gold reserves. Olaf Sleijpen, President of the Central Bank, said that moving gold to London would increase the liquidity and trading opportunities of the reserves. The bank aims to strengthen its preparedness for potential crises through this move.

London is considered one of the world’s most liquid gold markets. Central banks can more easily sell their reserves, purchase new gold, or use gold as collateral to obtain dollar liquidity. The Netherlands’ decision further strengthens the trend of relocating gold reserves in Europe. Previously, France also sold part of its gold reserves held in the United States and moved them to Paris. These moves show that central banks are seeking to manage their reserves more flexibly amid growing geopolitical uncertainty.
