Marine Le Pen, who plans to run in France’s 2027 presidential election, has criticized President Emmanuel Macron amid renewed looting in Paris and continuing unrest across the country.
Marine Le Pen, leader of France’s far-right National Rally party, said the country was in the midst of a crisis of confidence that posed a threat to democracy. She blamed both far-left forces and President Emmanuel Macron, whom she accused of losing both public trust and political credibility.
Le Pen made the remarks less than two hours before Macron was scheduled to address the nation at 8 p.m. local time.
Further outbreaks of violence were reported in Paris on Sunday afternoon. CRS-8, a specialized police unit trained to respond to urban unrest, was deployed for a second consecutive day.
Tensions were concentrated mainly in the city center, particularly around Place de la République. Clashes brought hundreds of protesters face to face with security forces. According to the Paris Police Prefecture, a call for an undeclared gathering at the square at 2 p.m. on Sunday had circulated on social media.
Groups of masked young people reportedly attacked and looted several businesses.
Meanwhile, figures released in connection with Saturday’s violence have drawn attention. The prefecture of Bouches-du-Rhône reported that more than 30,000 looters had been identified that day. The figure reportedly surprised even professionals working in law enforcement and the judicial system.
