Smartphones will be able to work without mobile networks!

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is preparing to accelerate the development of technologies that allow smartphones to connect directly to satellites. The commission is expected to vote on a new spectrum auction on October 29. The technology, known as “direct-to-device,” enables smartphones to connect directly to satellites in areas without mobile network coverage. Several companies, including SpaceX and Amazon’s Leo project, are working on this technology.
The FCC is proposing to auction a 25 MHz frequency band and make an additional 482 MHz of spectrum available for satellite-based services. The goal is to expand connectivity in areas without mobile coverage and provide users with more reliable communication options during emergencies. With the development of these systems, users may eventually be able to send messages, make calls and use other communication services directly from their smartphones without requiring a special satellite phone or additional equipment.
