US President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning the sale in the United States of certain products imported from Canada. The restrictions cover a range of goods, including alcoholic beverages, dairy products and motor vehicles.
The ban is not expected to have a significant impact on bilateral trade, given that annual trade between the United States and Canada amounts to around $880 billion. However, the move is seen as another stage in the ongoing trade dispute between Washington and Ottawa.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the decision was prompted by what he described as Canada's “discriminatory” policies toward US exports.
In July, the US administration announced 50% tariffs on certain goods imported from Canada, citing what it called Canada's “discriminatory” treatment of American products. The tariffs took effect on August 22.
In response, the Canadian government announced tariffs of 15%, 25% and 50% on certain US products. The measures were scheduled to take effect on September 8.
