Anthropic and Akamai Sign $11.6 Billion Deal

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has signed a seven-year, $11.6 billion agreement with Akamai Technologies to meet its growing computing power needs. The deal can be expanded by an additional $9 billion, potentially bringing its total value to around $20 billion. Following the announcement, Akamai’s shares rose 15%. Under the agreement, Akamai has obtained the right to acquire up to 5% of Anthropic’s outstanding shares. The initial $11.6 billion commitment is expected to result in Akamai acquiring an approximately 2% stake in the company. Akamai plans to generate $150–300 million in revenue from its partnership with Anthropic next year. Akamai CEO Tom Leighton said annual revenue from the partnership is expected to reach approximately $1.7 billion by 2028. As part of the agreement, Akamai will primarily invest in servers, chips and networking equipment. A significant portion of the spending is planned for next year. The company expects these investments to generate long-term returns.
