Azerbaijan Seeks to Resume Gas Purchases from Gazprom

SOCAR Vice President Elshad Nasirov says the company's cooperation with Gazprom is a distinctive example of a partnership involving both gas purchases and sales.

Azerbaijan wants to resume purchasing natural gas from Russian energy company Gazprom. Elshad Nasirov, vice president of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), made the statement at the Russian Energy Week international forum, Trend reported.

According to Nasirov, SOCAR initially purchased gas from Gazprom, later supplied gas to the Russian company, and now intends to resume purchases.

“We can proudly say that our cooperation with a giant like Gazprom is a very good example. SOCAR is probably the only company in the world that first bought gas from Gazprom, then sold gas to it, and now wants to buy gas again,” Nasirov said.

Asked about the volume of gas Azerbaijan plans to purchase from Russia, the SOCAR executive said that no specific figures or plans had been determined so far. He noted that the cooperation demonstrates that the two companies engage in both gas purchases and sales.

The Russian Energy Week international forum is being held in Moscow from October 14 to 16. The event is supported by the Russian government, the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation and the Moscow city government. The Roscongress Foundation is organizing the forum, while TASS serves as its information partner.
