Italy Seeks Changes to EU Financial Rules!
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni sent a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, calling for the impact of rising energy prices on inflation and household and business costs to be taken into account.

The Italian government is calling for greater financial flexibility within the European Union’s fiscal rules amid rising energy prices in Europe. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni sent a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, asking the impact of higher energy prices on inflation and household and business costs to be taken into account.
Meloni said that the limits set for countries’ net expenditure under the current fiscal framework restrict governments’ ability to provide support at a time when economic growth is weakening. Italy believes broader budgetary opportunities are needed to reduce the additional burden caused by rising energy costs.
Economy and Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti said the government would seek an additional margin of 0.6% of GDP for energy security and 0.9% for defense spending. European Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho said Brussels had rejected Italy’s request and noted that additional financial opportunities had already been provided to member states.
