Billionaire Elon Musk has proposed giving one share of SpaceX to “every child in America.” The statement came a day after Anthropic announced that it would allocate 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund.
On Monday, Elon Musk responded to Anthropic’s announcement on social media by suggesting that SpaceX shares should be distributed directly to the public.
“I promise one SpaceX share to every child in America,” Musk said.
SpaceX shares closed at $146.03 per share on Friday.
Anthropic announced on Sunday that a new entity established within the company, the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, would receive 5% of its shares. The fund’s value could increase as the company’s share price rises.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and the company’s five other co-founders established Anthropic as a Public Benefit Corporation. This legal status allows companies to pursue profits while also taking their social impact obligations into account.
Anthropic plans to launch an initial public offering (IPO) in November. In June, the company announced that it had confidentially filed documents with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in connection with its planned IPO.
That same month, SpaceX, led by Musk, also made its debut as a publicly traded company. The development was accompanied by reports that Musk’s wealth had reached record levels.
