North Korea tests missile with claimed artificial intelligence capabilities

North Korea has tested an intermediate-range strategic ballistic missile. Pyongyang says the missile is capable of changing its trajectory during flight and using artificial intelligence capabilities to evade missile defense systems.

According to Reuters, the missile was launched from the coastal area of Wonsan in eastern North Korea and traveled approximately 680–700 kilometers.

Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, said that the leader personally oversaw the missile test. According to her, the missile’s ability to maneuver at low altitudes and change its flight trajectory makes it more difficult for missile defense systems in South Korea and Japan to intercept.

Kim Yo-jong described the missile as “strategic.” The term is considered an indication that the missile may have the potential to carry a nuclear warhead.

South Korea and Japan released different estimates of the missile’s flight distance. Seoul said the missile traveled more than 700 kilometers, while Tokyo estimated the distance at approximately 680 kilometers.

The test came amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula. On September 21, three South Korean soldiers were injured in a mine explosion near the border. Seoul said the mines had been planted by North Korea, while Pyongyang denied the allegations.

North Korea has intensified its missile tests and military exercises in recent weeks. The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said the latest launch did not pose an immediate threat to the United States or its allies.

Pyongyang has expanded its nuclear and missile programs since nuclear talks with the United States ended without an agreement in 2019, while also strengthening military cooperation with Russia.
