Aliens or Artificial Intelligence? Could Technology Hold the Key to Unlocking the Mysteries of the Universe?

For centuries, humanity has been trying to discover whether we are alone in the universe. Unidentified flying objects, mysterious radio signals and possible messages from other planets have only intensified this curiosity. However, with the rapid development of artificial intelligence, a new question has emerged: Could AI itself become our greatest tool in the search for traces of extraterrestrial civilizations? The vastness of the universe has always fascinated the human imagination. The existence of life beyond Earth, the possibility of intelligent civilizations inhabiting other planets and their potential ability to communicate with us remain among the most intriguing questions in science. Today, astronomers are exploring billions of galaxies, star systems and planets beyond our Solar System. Advances in technology are also making observations possible that were once beyond our capabilities. However, a new participant has joined this search in the modern era: artificial intelligence. AI can analyze enormous volumes of data collected by astronomical telescopes, identify unusual signals and detect patterns that might escape human attention. This is opening a new chapter in the search for extraterrestrial life. Are We Alone in the Universe? What Does Science Say? First, it is important to note that no reliable scientific evidence confirming the existence of life beyond Earth has been discovered to date. NASA has also stated that it has found no confirmed evidence of life on other planets or of extraterrestrial technology. However, this does not mean that other forms of life do not exist in the universe. One of the main areas of scientific interest is exoplanets — planets located outside our Solar System. Some of these planets orbit their stars at distances that could theoretically allow liquid water to exist on their surfaces. Liquid water is considered one of the key conditions for the emergence of the forms of life known to us. Scientists are not searching exclusively for biological life, however. They are also investigating traces left behind by the technological activities of other civilizations. In scientific literature, these traces are known as technosignatures . Such traces could include unusual radio signals, laser pulses, artificially produced chemicals in planetary atmospheres and large technological structures. NASA's research also recognizes this as a distinct area of scientific investigation. Are Unidentified Flying Objects Evidence of Aliens? One of the most widely discussed topics in debates about extraterrestrial life is unidentified flying objects. In recent years, videos recorded by US Navy pilots, along with unusual aerial phenomena documented in different countries, have attracted widespread attention. These events are now commonly referred to as UAPs — Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena. The term UFO was used more frequently in the past. However, an important distinction must be made: the inability to identify an object does not mean that it is extraterrestrial in origin. Some such observations can be explained by weather balloons, satellites, aircraft, atmospheric phenomena, optical illusions or distortions caused by camera sensors. A 2023 independent research report published by NASA also emphasized that the available data were insufficient to confirm that UAP events were extraterrestrial in origin. Therefore, although investigating unexplained phenomena is important, reliable measurements and independent verification are necessary before scientific conclusions can be drawn about their origins. How Can Artificial Intelligence Detect Signals from Aliens? This is where things become particularly interesting. Analyzing radio signals arriving from space is a complex process for astronomers. Radio telescopes collect enormous volumes of data every day. These datasets contain signals from natural cosmic events, communication systems on Earth, satellites and other technological sources. Identifying a potentially artificial signal among all this information is extremely difficult. Artificial intelligence can significantly accelerate this process. Key capabilities of artificial intelligence include: 1. Radio signal analysis: Algorithms can analyze millions of signals to identify unusual frequencies and recurring patterns. 2. Anomaly detection: Signals that differ from ordinary astronomical processes can automatically be selected for further investigation. 3. Data comparison: Results obtained from different telescopes can be compared to identify multiple observations of the same event. 4. Distinguishing artificial signals from natural ones: Machine-learning models can help separate interference from human technology from signals originating in space. 5. Identifying new patterns: AI can detect signal characteristics that researchers did not initially anticipate. A 2023 NASA study on technosignatures also highlighted the potential applications of artificial intelligence in this field. Artificial Intelligence Is Already Searching for Signs of Aliens in Space Research in this area is no longer purely theoretical. As part of the Breakthrough Listen project, researchers have analyzed data collected by radio telescopes using machine-learning and deep-learning algorithms. The aim has been to identify potentially technological signals among millions of radio signals while filtering out radio interference originating on Earth. Although the initial analysis identified signals of interest, subsequent observations failed to detect them again. As a result, researchers could not confirm that these signals were associated with extraterrestrial technology. This finding illustrates an important point: artificial intelligence can identify candidate signals, but additional observations are essential to establish their authenticity. In June 2026, the SETI Institute announced the results of another interesting study. Researchers investigated the interstellar object known as 3I/ATLAS, discovered in July 2025 and originating from beyond our Solar System, for possible radio signals. Observations were conducted for more than seven hours using the Allen Telescope Array. Approximately 74 million narrowband signals were initially recorded. After several filtering stages, around 200 candidate signals were retained for further analysis. Ultimately, all of them were identified as interference associated with technological sources on Earth or satellites orbiting our planet. As a result, no radio signal associated with extraterrestrial technology was detected near the 3I/ATLAS object. This research is another example of the growing importance of artificial intelligence and automated data analysis in space exploration. Could Artificial Intelligence Itself Be the Product of an Alien Civilization? This is perhaps the most intriguing and controversial aspect of the subject. When people think of extraterrestrial life, they usually imagine biological beings — either humanoid creatures or life forms entirely different from anything on Earth. However, if an advanced civilization exists somewhere else in the universe, its level of technological development could be completely different from anything we can imagine. In theory, a civilization that developed millions of years ago may have advanced its technological systems to a point where they no longer depend on biological beings. The longest-lasting technological traces of such a civilization could be robots, automated systems and spacecraft operated by artificial intelligence. Although this scenario is often found in science fiction, it is also considered in scientific and philosophical discussions about the possible future of technological civilizations. Nevertheless, there is currently no scientific evidence confirming the existence of independently operating extraterrestrial artificial intelligence systems in the universe. Another Problem Created by Artificial Intelligence: Fake Images of Aliens The development of artificial intelligence not only helps the search for extraterrestrial life but also increases the risk of misinformation. Today, generative AI can produce videos, photographs and audio recordings that closely resemble authentic footage. This is one reason why the authenticity of some videos of unidentified flying objects circulating on social media has come into question. People may sometimes mistake AI-generated images for real events and share them as evidence. Under these circumstances, relying solely on visual material is not enough when investigating an alleged space-related event. Experts consider it essential to verify the original source, establish where and when the footage was recorded, compare it with other observations and obtain independent confirmation. When Could Humanity Detect Its First Signal from an Alien Civilization? There is currently no way to provide a precise answer to this question. The scale of the universe, the distances between stars and the conditions required for life to emerge make the search extremely challenging. Furthermore, even if another civilization exists, its communication technology may be completely different from the signals we are currently searching for. For example, while we monitor radio waves, another civilization may use laser pulses or technologies that are not yet known to humanity. For this reason, scientists are trying to investigate not just one type of signal but a wide range of possible technological traces. Artificial intelligence can expand the scope of this search, accelerate data processing and reveal phenomena that may previously have gone unnoticed. Aliens or Artificial Intelligence? In fact, these two concepts are not alternatives to one another. The existence of extraterrestrial life remains a fundamental scientific question that researchers have yet to answer. Artificial intelligence, meanwhile, is becoming one of the most promising technological tools for finding that answer. At present, there is no reliable evidence confirming that unidentified flying objects are extraterrestrial in origin or that any signal received from space belongs to another civilization. One thing, however, remains clear: what we know about the universe is still not enough to understand all its mysteries. Perhaps one day humanity will detect the first signal from another civilization. And the first to recognize that signal may not be a human being, but artificial intelligence itself.
