Artificial Intelligence Is Influencing Central Bank Decisions!

Deputy Governor of the Bank of Japan Shinichi Uchida said that artificial intelligence could have a significant impact on interest rate policy. According to him, massive investments in AI could boost economic activity while putting pressure on inflation and interest rates.

The growing investment in AI companies is particularly increasing demand for data centers and next-generation technology infrastructure. These investments could raise demand for goods and services, leading to higher prices. Uchida believes that AI could create a strong positive demand shock in the economy. If demand remains high for an extended period, central banks may face greater challenges in fighting inflation and could need higher interest rates.

At the same time, there is a risk that AI investments may fail to deliver the expected returns. In such a scenario, market optimism could quickly fade, putting new pressure on stocks and bonds. In addition, higher productivity and investment driven by AI could raise the neutral interest rate (R-star), potentially leading to higher interest rates in the future.
