Japan’s Services Inflation Accelerated!

Japan’s Services Producer Price Index, one of the key indicators of inflation in the services sector, recorded its fastest annual growth in more than two years in August. According to data released by the Bank of Japan (BOJ), the index, which measures the prices companies charge each other for services, rose 3.7% year on year in August, compared with 3.6% in July. The increase was the highest annual growth since June 2024. Higher costs for freight transportation, advertising and rentals contributed to the rise in prices.

The data indicate strengthening price pressures in the services sector. The BOJ closely monitors the indicator to assess how much companies are passing rising labor costs on to service prices. The BOJ raised its key interest rate to 1.25% this month, its highest level in 31 years. The bank’s leadership has indicated that rates could be raised further if inflation remains above its target. The increase in the index suggests that price pressures are spreading to other parts of the economy, making the indicator important for the BOJ’s future interest-rate decisions.
