U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration has revoked more than 300,000 visas during his second term in office. According to the State Department, the pace of visa revocations has accelerated in recent weeks.

According to Reuters, State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott provided the information on October 20.

On August 10, the State Department said that more than 175,000 visas had been revoked since Trump began his second term in January 2025. The latest figures indicate that the process has accelerated significantly in recent weeks.

In a post on social media, Tommy Pigott said the Trump administration had revoked more visas in a shorter period than any previous administration. He added that the government maintained a zero-tolerance policy toward visa holders who violate the law, commit fraud or pose a threat to U.S. national security.

Visa Revocations Draw Criticism

The Trump administration’s tough immigration policies have drawn criticism from human rights advocates. Critics say the measures could undermine due process and freedom of speech, while increasing concerns among ethnic and religious minorities.

Controversial cases involving visa revocations include foreign pro-Palestinian demonstrators who opposed Israel’s military operations in the Gaza Strip, a U.S. ally, as well as some foreign nationals who commented on social media about the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.

The administration has also tightened scrutiny of immigrants’ and visa applicants’ social media accounts. Human rights advocates fear that this approach could be used to target individuals who criticize the government.

Critics also argue that isolated cases of fraud are being used to justify broader measures against certain immigrant communities. These concerns include the treatment of the Somali American community in Minnesota.

Legal Immigration Also Becomes More Difficult

During his 2024 presidential campaign, Donald Trump made curbing illegal immigration one of his key promises. However, his administration’s policies have also affected legal immigration procedures.

Measures have included imposing high fees for certain work visas and tightening immigration enforcement.

The administration justifies these measures as necessary to protect national security and ensure compliance with immigration laws. Human rights advocates, however, say the policies raise serious concerns regarding the protection of rights, freedom of speech and the prevention of discrimination.
